Morning Welcome and Keynote, featuring Zixta Q. Martinez

Zixta Q. Martinez and Juan R. Thomas

The Economic Justice Summit of the American Bar Association Section of Civil Rights and Social Justice began day two with a virtual morning welcome from Section Chair Juan R. Thomas and ABA President Deborah Enix-Ross. Then, U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Deputy Director Zixta Q. Martinez speaks about how unfair, excessive, and surprise junk fees distort the consumer market and disproportionately increase costs for certain populations, including lower-income households and people of color. She discusses how the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, with support from the legal community, can advance economic justice by promoting fair, competitive, and transparent consumer markets.

This keynote was a part of CRSJ’s hybrid Economic Justice Summit — held on March 30-31, 2023 — the Section held its Economic Justice Summit at the Georgetown University Law Center. Continuing with CRSJ’s 22-23 Bar Year theme of economic justice, this two-day Summit convened lawyers, activists, policymakers, and key stakeholders to formulate policy solutions to our country’s most critical economic disparities and devise strategies to implement such policy solutions.
