Since our founding almost 60 years ago, the American Bar Association Section of Civil Rights and Social Justice (“Section”) has been dedicated to protecting and advancing civil rights, civil liberties, and human rights issues. Like the American Bar Association itself, our Section stands for the Rule of Law and a fair and equal justice system.
We stand at a critical juncture where the foundation of our democracy and the guiding principles of our profession are under attack. Recent events have displayed blatant disregard and relentless assault on the Rule of Law. The Administration's actions have undermined the long-standing checks and balances among the three branches of government, threatening to dismantle our republic. Unquestionably, many Executive Orders and actions from the current Administration have already had devastating consequences for both the legal profession and the communities we serve. These actions clearly threaten the essence of our democracy and the fundamental civil rights and legal protections we hold dear.
The American Bar Association recently reaffirmed its dedication to the core principles and commitment to the Rule of Law and a legal process that is both "orderly and fair." By coming together as a profession to uphold the Rule of Law, we reinforce its importance in our legal practices and send a powerful message of unity. We are prepared to meet this moment with the urgency it demands. The Section fully supports the American Bar Association’s efforts and commitments, and we remain focused on our mission to protect and advance civil rights, civil liberties, and justice for all. We will act and stand with integrity!
