Recently, in Missouri, public defenders sought court orders to halt further appointments to cases due to excessive caseload. In St. Louis, a trial judge granted the relief sought and, in so doing, relied upon a study conducted by the ABA Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defendants (ABA SCLAID). The Missouri Project report, available at http://www.indigentdefense.org, used the Delphi methodology to establish workload standards for public defenders in Missouri.
