Court Grants Missouri Public Defenders Relief from Excessive Caseloads, Citing ABA Workload Study

Recently, in Missouri, public defenders sought court orders to halt further appointments to cases due to excessive caseload. In St. Louis, a trial judge granted the relief sought and, in so doing, relied upon a study conducted by the ABA Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defendants (ABA SCLAID). The Missouri Project report, available at, used the Delphi methodology to establish workload standards for public defenders in Missouri.
