Journal Submission Format

Article

  1. E-mail article to editor preferably in Microsoft Word. (Submit article on time or early.) 
  2. Standard ABA copyright agreement and disclosure of any previous publication of same or similar text elsewhere will be requested of all authors by Coordinating Editor Lori Lyons.
  3. Author photograph to accompany a brief author biography in the article will be requested by Coordinating Editor. We cannot accept photos downloaded from the Web or photos embedded in Word files. Photographs should be in the following format:
    File format: TIFF, JPEG
    Image Resolution: 300 dpi or higher
    Image Size: 1.5" wide by 2" high (minimum)
    Color Mode: CMYK, Grayscale
  4. Length: 10 to 25 double spaced pages, subject to exceptions agreed to by editor. 
  5. The article must be national in scope. Scholarly articles with substantial endnotes are more likely to be published. (Endnotes, NOT FOOTNOTES.)
  6. Font: Times New Roman, 12 point. 
  7. Double-spaced, with 1-inch margins and each paragraph indented. 
  8. Headings: Only two levels of headings; main headings in bold; subheadings in bold italics; capitalize first letter of each word only other than prepositions, articles, and conjunctions of four letters or less ( headings should not be all caps ); 12-point font; and no auto-formatting of headngs. 
  9. Charts & tables: Disclosure of the software in which they are written, use charts and tables only where necessary. 
  10. Author attribution limited to author’s name, firm name, and city.

Citations

  1. Form in accordance with The Blue Book and style in accordance with The Chicago Manual of Style.
  2. Make sure the endnotes are checked for format and substance before submission.
  3. Case name only, not full cite, in text of article.
  4. Use italics, not underlined, for case names in text.
  5. Use endnotes, not footnotes.
  6. Case names should be in regular font in endnotes, not italics or underlined, unless a shortened version of the citation is used, in which case italics should be used.
  7. Do not use the shortened version of a citation unless the citation is within five endnotes of the previous citation.
  8. Use small caps for book and periodical names.
  9. Order of case citation within signal unless one case is more important than the others: Supreme Court by date, F2d. by date, F. Supp. by date, state cases alphabetically and by date for cites within the same state.
  10. Do not use supra in case citations.

Grammar

  1. Use comma before “and” in a series of three or more words or phrases. 
  2. No comma before “and” if only two words or phrases are in a series.
    Use comma before “and” if two sentences are connected by the word and use capitals sparingly.
  3. Court is capitalized only where citing to the Supreme Court. Board is not capitalized. 
  4. Omit useless words and phrases. 
  5. Spell out numbers one through ninety-nine. 
  6. Use should, would, could, and may sparingly. 
  7. Use active voice. 
  8. Do not write in the first person. 
  9. Short is better. 
  10. Do not provide exhaustive statement of facts of a case.
