Visiting Open-Rank Professor – Media Law Ethics

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Iowa seeks to hire a visiting faculty member whose scholarship and/or professional experience explores the intersection of digital technology, media law and ethics, and questions of race, social justice, and oppression. This position is renewable for up to three-years pending positive reviews, and open-rank, dependent upon the qualifications of the applicant. In addition, there is a possibility of a joint-appointment with the new Media, Policy and Public Opinion Program of the University’s Public Policy Center. The successful candidate will have a J.D., Ph.D. or M.A. in mass communication or a related field, and a strong record of scholarship and/or professional experience. Teaching experience at the university level is required. Our School’s social justice mission leads us to invest in recruiting colleagues who in their scholarship, teaching, and service demonstrate experience, knowledge of, and sensitivity to the needs of marginalized and oppressed populations. We seek candidates with a demonstrated commitment to work with marginalized communities and with students holding a range of worldviews.

Education Requirement: The successful candidate will have a J.D., Ph.D. or M.A. in mass communication or a related field.

Required Qualifications: Doctoral degree in mass communication or related discipline, or juris doctorate, or a master’s degree in mass communication or related discipline and a strong record of scholarship and/or professional experience. Teaching experience at the university level.

Desirable Qualifications: Demonstrated expertise in the intersection of law, ethics, digital technology, and questions of racial and social justice and oppression. Possible areas of interest include, but are not limited to: First Amendment studies; media law and public policy; political communication, and public opinion.
