Thirty years ago, Steve Bright moved to Atlanta, Georgia, to begin representing death-sentenced prisoners in the South. On November 15, 2012, the Southern Center for Human Rights will honor him and his many years of service with its Frederick Douglass Award, given to those who demonstrate “exceptional courage and tenacity in the defense of human rights and equal justice.” During the past three decades, Steve has written and spoken passionately about racism in the death penalty system and the inadequate representation of capital defendants and death row prisoners. He has twice argued and won death penalty cases at the US Supreme Court and frequently testifi es before Congress and other legislative bodies. Steve has been a member of American Bar Association task forces and currently teaches courses on the death penalty and criminal law at Yale Law School. Steve has received numerous awards and honorary degrees for his work, including the ABA’s Thurgood Marshall Award and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers’ Lifetime Achievement Award. The award ceremony will be held at the Grand Hyatt Washington in Washington, DC.
