Project Participates in Miami Federal Bar Association Luncheon

Becca Eden

On November 2, 2011, the Project joined the South Florida Chapter of the Federal Bar Association during its monthly luncheon for a program that focused on the importance of high quality legal representation in death penalty cases and the ability of volunteer law firms to provide desperately needed assistance to prisoners without. The luncheon featured a panel that included Judge Rosemary Barkett of the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, Judges Paul C. Huck and Kathleen M. Williams of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida, and Project Director Robin Maher.

The judges spoke about their experiences presiding over death penalty cases, as well as their own views of the benefits of pro bono work. Judge Huck described pro bono work as “one of the most selfish things you can do, because the rewards are so great.” Judge Williams added that pro bono representation would “probably be the most rewarding of your career.”

FBA Chapter President Brett Barfield described the November luncheon as one of the Chapter’s most well-attended events. More than 150 individuals joined the Project at the Bankers Club in Miami for the luncheon. Special thanks to the Federal Bar Association for hosting the luncheon and featuring this important discussion!
