Women and gender minorities face unique challenges in the U.S. criminal legal system. The vast majority of incarcerated women have experienced gender-based violence, but those experiences are routinely ignored or dismissed during their criminal trials. Lawyers and judges receive little training on these issues. As a result, gender bias in courts, police stations, and prisons often goes unnoticed and unremedied. In this panel, experts in the field discussed the challenges faced by women and marginalized groups in the criminal legal system and proposed innovative solutions.
