John Buchanan, Senior Counsel at Covington & Burling LLP and the firm's first Insurance Practice Group Coordinator, has represented policyholders in major insurance recoveries ranging from old-fashioned freight derailments to novel cyber-related losses. He advises clients, and frequently speaks and writes, about AI-related risk management, including autonomous vehicles, robotics, “InsurTech,” GenAI, and Metaverse risks.
John has served as an Adviser to the ALI’s Liability Insurance Restatement and taught a graduate-level Insurance Litigation course at UConn’s Insurance Law Center. He currently co-chairs committees on cyber and emerging risks for the American College of Coverage Counsel and the Litigation Section’s Insurance Coverage Litigation Committee.
A graduate of Princeton, Oxford, and Harvard Law School, John clerked on the Third Circuit before joining Covington. Among other peer-rated listings, The National Law Journal named him an Insurance Trailblazer in 2021, and Best Lawyers named him (for the second time) Washington Insurance Lawyer of the Year in 2022.
