Description of Programs
All students at the Southern Illinois University School of Law are required to complete 35 hours of pro bono work prior to graduation. The work must be law related, uncompensated, supervised by an attorney or faculty member, and not for academic credit.
Location of Programs
Work may be completed on or off campus. Students must be supervised by a licensed attorney or member of the faculty for their pro bono work.
Staffing/Management/Oversight
Pro bono hours are recorded by a law student worker. The administrator overseeing the program is the Director of Clinical and Experiential Learning.
Funding
There is no funding currently available for pro bono projects.
Student Run Pro Bono Groups/Specialized Law Education Projects
OUTLaw Transgender Name Change and Gender Marker Project: The Transgender Name Change and Gender Marker project provides free legal assistance for residents of Jackson and Williamson counties. Law students assist adults and minors who have parental consent seeking to legally change their name and/or gender on their birth certificates.
Faculty and Administrative Pro Bono
Immigration Detention Project: Several times each year, SIU law students have the opportunity to volunteer to visit the Pulaski County Justice & Detention Center in Ullin, IL to meet with the immigration detainees being held there by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which is part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
The SIU eDiscovery Pro Bono Project provides pro bono services to non-profits engaged in discovery of electronically stored information for legal advocacy purposes.
Awards/Recognition
The School of Law gives the Pro Bono Award to the student with the most pro bono hours at graduation.
Community Service
The Student Bar Association and various other student organizations select community service projects each year.

The Joseph R. Bartylak Public Interest Fellowship Program assists students who accept nonpaying, full-time (defined as 35 or more hours per week/7 weeks), public interest summer internships following their first or second year of law school.
