Termtime Fellowships & Awards

A full definition of the term "Termtime Fellowships & Awards" as it is used in this Law School Public Interest and Pro Bono directory

Definition

Term-time fellowships and stipends are awarded during the school year and are designed to encourage pursuit of public interest law by students who have demonstrated a commitment to public interest. Students may receive a full or partial tuition scholarship and enjoy special programming and counseling as well as academic opportunities not available to the student body. While academic grade point average, LSAT scores and financial need may be considered for eligibility, schools also place a heavy emphasis on a demonstrated commitment to and experience in public service. Stipends and fellowships range from nominal sums to full tuition waivers.

Public Interest Scholarship Program (PIPS): American University Washington College of Law (AUWCL) is proud to invest in the next wave of public interest leaders by providing three-year, full-tuition, Public Interest/Service Scholarships (PIPS). AUWCL created the PIPS Program in 2001 to provide financial and programmatic support to students with strong academic credentials and the desire and potential to pursue a meaningful public interest or public service career upon graduation.

The Myers Law Scholarship: The Myers Law Scholarship is AUWCL’s most prestigious donor award and provides one-year scholarships to matriculated full-time JD students (one or two annually) who show academic promise and demonstrate financial need. Scholarships are funded up to 125 percent of tuition.

Restricted Scholarships: Through the generosity of AUWCL friends and alumni, dozens of named scholarships are awarded annually to registered students ranging in amounts from $1,000 to upwards of $20,000 depending on funding levels in a given year. Selection criteria for these scholarships vary. Most commonly awards are based on financial need and/or academic achievement.

In 2004, Baylor Law School established the Equal Justice Scholarship, a full-tuition scholarship awarded with a commitment from the student to work for at least three years in a Texas public interest setting following graduation. The intention was that the scholarship would serve the same purpose of an LRAP but would do so on the 'front end.' Instead of assisting in the payment of loans that had accrued and would continue to accrue interest, the scholarship would minimize the number of loans that would need to be taken in the first place. This has enabled students to accept positions working with low-income Texans that they would not have been able to accept but for the scholarship because of the low salaries associated with these positions.

Pro Bono Spring Break Partnering with the Texas Access to Justice Foundation, fourteen Baylor Law Students volunteered their time over Spring Break to work with various legal aid entities around the state. Eight students worked with Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid, which is the third largest legal services provider in the nation and the largest in the state of Texas. Three students worked with the Montgomery County's pro se assistance clinic, helping pro se litigants move their cases through the court system under the supervision of a Montgomery County staff attorney. In addition, two students worked with the Montgomery County Women's Center helping clients with probate documents, and one student worked with the Livingston County's Lone Star Legal Aid office. Due to the success of this program, we hope to annually provide this opportunity to students.

Boston College Law School

Law School Funded:

Each year, Boston College Law School awards three full-tuition Public Service Scholarships to highly qualified applicants who are committed to practicing law in service of the public after graduation. In keeping with Boston College Law School's mission of education for the service of others and in recognition of the fact that such work tends to be significantly under-compensated, this program supports students committed to careers in the public sector by mitigating the expense and associated debts of their legal education by offering three full-tuition scholarships annually. Recipients are selected by a scholarship committee appointed by the Dean.

Public Service Scholars are given a faculty mentor to support them throughout their three years at BC Law. Public Service Scholars are expected to work both of their summers during law school for a public interest organization (exceptions to this policy will be considered in extraordinary circumstances and must be authorized by the Scholarship Committee). Public Service Scholars are expected to take a substantial leadership role in the public interest community at the Law School. Examples of activities that would fulfill this expectation are:

  • assist in running the annual Public Interest Retreat;
  • organize the Law School's annual Diversity month;
  • assume a leadership role in PILF or other public interest organizations;
  • organize colloquia on public policy and law topics.

Public Service Scholars are expected to work for a public interest organization after graduation.

The Public Interest Scholarship program at Boston University School of Law provides a full tuition scholarship for all three years to selected incoming students who have demonstrated their desire to pursue a career in public interest law.

The definition of public interest law is broad and includes both domestic and international work; direct service, impact litigation, and policy work; and government and non-profit work. Recent public interest scholars have come to BU Law with career goals in international human rights, immigration law, public health, judicial clerkships, public defense, prosecution, government at all levels, housing policy, environmental policy, and criminal justice reform.

Applicants who wish to be considered for the Public Interest Scholarship must submit an additional essay with their applications for admission. Your personal statement cannot be used as the essay for the Public Interest Scholarship. The essay is your opportunity to explain your particular area of interest and how law school will help you to fulfill your public interest goals.

Applications must be submitted by January 15. Scholarship offers may be made on a rolling basis.

In addition to the Public Interest Scholarship, recipients are granted a $5,400 stipend for their 1L and 2L summers to pursue public interest internships, as well as career guidance and faculty mentoring.

The National Center for Adoption Law & Policy (NCALP) Fellowship program is designed to provide students interested in this practice area with a specialized law school experience, including unique educational, extracurricular, and employment opportunities. The program was established with the goal of developing a cohort of highly trained legal advocates to advance the interests of children and their families in communities both locally and nationally.

Many factors place children and youth at risk of involvement with our nation's delinquency and child protection court systems, including child abuse and neglect, substance abuse, mental health needs, and educational issues. Of the 900,000 children served by the child welfare system, 114,000 foster care children wait for safe, permanent homes because their biological parents' rights have been terminated. Thousands of these youths exit the foster care system without the skills needed for successful independent living, leaving them vulnerable to unemployment, homelessness, and criminal behavior.

Successful outcomes and futures for these children and youth are dependent on talented and dedicated legal professionals acting in all capacities within our child welfare and juvenile justice systems. Well-trained, highly qualified child advocates, agency counsel, government attorneys, and juvenile judges can make all the difference between a youth's successful transition into adulthood and a youth's continued struggle in the system.

Law School Funded: Public Interest Fellowship

Columbia Law School awards Public Interest Fellowships, scholarships that provide tuition benefits for the full three years, to a small number of incoming students who are committed to public interest or public service law, bring strong academic credentials, and are expected to work in public interest or public service for at least the first five years following graduation. In addition to the Guaranteed Summer Funding program, Columbia Law School offers fellowships to students spending their summers working in public interest.

Greene Public Service Scholarship

The Greene Public Service Scholarship is an annual scholarship that was established at Columbia Law School in 2017 through a generous gift from the Jerome L. Greene Foundation for the purpose of “cultivat[ing] legal minds whose focus is to serve their communities and fight for social justice.” The Greene Public Service Scholarship awards full-tuition scholarships to two incoming students who express a strong interest in pursuing a career in public interest or public service and demonstrate a commitment to such a career, bring strong academic credentials, and are expected to work in public interest or public service for at least the first five years following graduation.

Alongside the tuition benefits provided under both the Public Interest Fellowship and the Greene Scholarship, recipients are partnered with a faculty mentor who is a public interest activist-scholar in their field of interest, as well as with Columbia Law School alumni and upper-year mentors. They also receive automatic acceptance into the Public Interest/Public Service Fellows Program during their 1L year and the Human Rights Internship Program or Guaranteed Summer Funding Program for their first and second summers.

There is no application process for either the Public Interest Fellowship or the Greene Scholarship. Candidates are selected based on admissions materials, and individuals will be contacted directly by the selection committee and will be notified about selection upon admission to Columbia Law School.

Since 1997, the law school has secured grant funding to support a Summer Poverty Law internship. This grant provides paid internship opportunities for Drake law students with Legal Services Corporation offices in Iowa and with local and state agencies representing children in need of assistance. Interns had full-time work (400 hr.) at $15 per hour. The internship qualifies under the Iowa Supreme Court Student Practice Rule as law school-supervised academic experiences because of faculty supervision; however, because students are paid through grant funds, the students do not receive academic credit. In addition, for more than ten years, the Law School has committed scholarship funds to support summer public interest internships. The law school authorized scholarship funding to support externships and Legal Clinic Howard Fellows internships. The externships permit work in a range of public interest programs anywhere in U.S.

Public Interest Law Scholarship Program - The Public Interest Law Scholarship covers full tuition, renewable each year as long as the scholar remains in good academic standing, as well as a $3,000 stipend for one unpaid public interest co-op. It is the most generous and prestigious scholarship offered by the law school and recipients are among our strongest students. Not only do the recipients have academic profiles that boast strong scores and grades, they also have impressive backgrounds in fields that pertain to social justice and public service. Many have worked for years in areas including human rights, immigration, social work, child advocacy, prison reform, politics and welfare reform. The scholarship is funded by major donations from law school graduates and friends. Launched in 1999 by generous donors who believed that the mission of the law school naturally led to the need for such a scholarship, the first class of scholars graduated in 2003. Public interest law scholars are expected to participate and play a leadership role in a variety of public interest activities at the law school. For those who receive the Public Interest Law Scholarship, it is required that at least two of their four required co-ops be in public interest law. Once scholars have graduated from the School of Law, it is expected that a significant portion of their careers be dedicated to public interest law.

Rutgers Law School is committed to promoting public interest law through a variety of programs and opportunities for our students. Each year, Rutgers Law recognizes a small cohort of incoming students at the Camden location as Social Justice Scholars. These students demonstrate an exceptional commitment to public service and are most likely to dedicate their legal careers to working on social justice causes and on behalf of underserved communities. Only a limited number of students receive this distinction, which carries the following benefits and responsibilities. https://law.rutgers.edu/RL-social-justice-scholars

The Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Fellowship Program enlists law students in an effort to increase civic literacy and participation in American democracy. Talented second- and third-year law students on the Camden campus prepare and teach a course in constitutional law to high school students. The aim is to make the Constitution “come alive” for young people while simultaneously improving law students’ ability to translate and explain complicated legal concepts into lay terms. Fellows are chosen through a competitive process during the spring semester of each year. Applicants are chosen based on their academic preparation, motivation, maturity, commitment to the power of education and the urgency of greater access to it, and intellectual curiosity about constitutional issues.
