Student Public Interest Groups

A full definition of the term "Student Public Interest Groups" as it is used in this Law School Public Interest and Pro Bono directory

Definition

Student organizations relating to public interest enhance the academic experience by allowing law students to contribute directly to the public interest in a wide-range of areas, receive the benefit of extra-curricular exchange and gain leadership experience. Many student organizations are involved in service projects, such as raising funds for summer public interest fellowships or sponsoring a food drive for the poor.

Most law schools belong to Equal Justice Works (www.equaljusticeworks.org) and have an Equal Justice Works chapter, which may be a school's most prominent public interest organization. Equal Justice Works (formerly the National Association for Public Interest Law) was founded in 1986 by law students dedicated to surmounting barriers to equal justice that affect millions of low-income people. Today, Equal Justice Works organizes, trains and supports public service-minded law students in creating summer and postgraduate public interest jobs. Through annual donations from law firms, corporations and foundations, Equal Justice Works funds a post-graduate fellowship program. Equal Justice Works chapters typically raise funds for summer public interest fellowships, organize law-related or community service projects and sponsor public interest career panels or brown-bag lunches.

Other public interest student organizations may be organized according to subjects relating to public interest concerns, such as the death penalty, human rights, environmental law and immigration law. Some student groups are dedicated to the needs and interests if traditionally under-represented populations, such as the Black Law Students Association and Hispanic Law Students Association.

Since its inception, Delta Theta Phi has produced a number of distinguished members, including Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sandra Day O'Connor, and Jeane J. Kirkpatrick. The Catholic University of America's Columbus School of Law is the home of Delta Theta Phi's Hughes senate. The Hughes senate focuses on three major goals for its members: professional development, scholastic achievement, and community service.

Habitat for Humanity - The CUA Law chapter of Habitat for Humanity is affiliated with the international Habitat for Humanity organization, which is a nonprofit, ecumenical-Christian housing ministry. The law school chapter seeks to further the international organization's goals of eliminating poverty housing and homelessness from the world and making decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. To accomplish these goals, the chapter invites law students and faculty members to participate in and fundraise for organized house builds in partnership with families in need.

Students for Public Interest Law - Students for Public Interest Law (SPIL) puts on numerous events and community service/pro bono activities aimed at providing information about and experience in public interest law. SPIL also hosts numerous fundraisers throughout the year to provide summer stipends to students working in the public interest arena. The biggest event is the Annual SPIL Auction, which raises over $30,000 each year for summer stipends.

Chapman University Dale E. Fowler School of Law

Public Interest Law Foundation - The Public Interest Law Foundation (PILF) provides grants to law students who wish to work at summer public interest jobs that offer little or no pay. Many public interest law employers desperately need student legal help but are unable to afford to pay for the help they need. PILF provides financial support through grants to these student employees so that they can get the experience they need, and the employers can continue to provide the public with much needed legal support.

There are a host of student public interest groups on campus that seek opportunities to engage their membership in pro bono and community service work.

Georgia State University College of Law

Golden Gate University School of Law

Student Bar Association (SBA): SBA is the official voice of School of Law students. An umbrella organization funded by student fees, the SBA coordinates various programs, activities, and events to meet the educational, recreational, and interpersonal needs of the student body. All JD students are members of the SBA and pay a fee of $20 per semester to fund SBA activities. In turn, the SBA disburses these funds to support other student groups and activities. Students elect SBA officers and representatives each spring. The representatives come from each class of the day and evening divisions. The officers of the SBA are the president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer. Together with the representatives, these officers constitute the board of directors. The president of the SBA serves on the School of Law's hearing panel and attends meetings of the Golden Gate University Board of Trustees.

ACLU-NC Student Chapter: The ACLU of Northern California works to preserve and guarantee the protections of the Constitution's Bill of Rights. We aim to extend these freedoms to segments of our population who have traditionally been denied their rights, including people of color; lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and transgendered people; women; mental-health patients; prisoners; people with disabilities; and the poor. In addition to the litigation for which the ACLU-NC has been known over the past seven decades, we also educate the public, inform the media, lobby legislators, organize grassroots activists, and disseminate information about our constitutional freedoms.

American Bar Association Law Student Division (ABA/LSD): ABA/LSD seeks to further academic excellence by encouraging law students to participate in the efforts of the organized bar in the formation and revision of standards of legal education. In the past, the School of Law's chapter sponsored a "Surviving Law School" program, introducing both day and evening division first-year students to the reality of law school, and organized an annual Homeless Luncheon.

American Constitution Society (ACS): ACS is a progressive organization comprised of law students, lawyers, scholars, judges, policymakers, activists, and other concerned individuals working to ensure that the fundamental principles of human dignity, individual rights and liberties, genuine equality, and access to justice are in their rightful, central place in American law. Employment Law Association (ELA): ELA members promote employment and labor law, uncover the hot issues in these areas, and build a network together.

Environmental Law Society (ELS): ELS discusses current developments in environmental law and works to further the goals of protecting the environment as well as securing placements in the legal field. ELS also participates in the annual Earth Day cleanup and the annual beach cleanup, hosts speakers on environmental issues, and periodically cosponsors a symposium dealing with emerging issues in environmental law. ELS participates each spring in the Environmental Conference in Eugene, Oregon, which provides a setting for interested students to meet and share information about events, school programs, jobs, and new developments in the field of environmental law.

Federalist Society (FS): The Federalist Society is a nationwide organization of conservative and libertarian law students, lawyers, and members of the judiciary. The society is founded on the principles of individual liberty, limited government, and the rule of law.

Intellectual Property Law Association (IPLA): IPLA seeks to forge and maintain relationships among students, the School of Law and firms, corporations, businesses, and other organizations involved in all areas of intellectual property law to educate students about intellectual property law, aid students in obtaining IP-related employment, and promote the integrity of the School of Law's IP law program to the legal community. IPLA has surveyed local firms to determine their hiring preferences regarding recent graduates and summer associate positions, sponsored presentations by local attorneys regarding issues in IP law, and cosponsored activities with professional organizations such as California Lawyers for the Arts.

International Law Society (ILS): ILS brings together students of diverse backgrounds and interests with a common goal of promoting and fostering an increased understanding and appreciation of international law at all levels, whether public, private, comparative, theoretical, or practical. ILS is an active member of the International Law Student Association (ILSA), a worldwide umbrella student organization.

Iranian Law Student Association (ILSA): The Iranian Law Students Association ("ILSA") of Golden Gate University seeks to promote the professional and cultural advancement of the Iranian community in the Bay Area. Latino Law Students Association (La RAZA): A main objective of La Raza is to provide academic and moral support for first-year students. La Raza provides direction and advice to first-year students through its mentor/mentee program and scheduled general meetings. La Raza also strives to facilitate bonds among students who are interested in Latino issues and serves as an information resource group for its members. Upper-division students can benefit from the host of career and scholarship/fellowship opportunities that are available for people of color. Additionally, La Raza brings Latino community issues back to the law student through e-mail postings and announcements at its general meetings.

NIAF also educates members of the Italian American community on issues that are of interest to them and may affect government policy, and aims to protect the history, heritage, and accomplishments of Italian Americans. In addition, NIAF seeks to help young Italian Americans attain their educational goals. This group is also known as "CIAO," the California Italian-American Advocates Association.

National Lawyers Guild (NLG): NLG is a progressive group of lawyers, law students, and legal workers that provides legal support for workers and for persons who are racially, sexually, or politically oppressed. The Bay Area chapter strives to expose law students to a variety of public interest law practices and connect students with practitioners working in areas of particularly urgent need. The Bay Area chapter of the NLG recently organized projects on SSI reapplications, affirmative action, prisoner's rights, and immigrant rights.

  1. Public Interest Law Group (PILG) aims to encourage law students to devote their careers to the struggle for social justice, expose students to the broad range of work being done to advance progressive legal goals, provide a forum for discussion and an information base, and inspire students to follow their hearts. PILG encourages involvement in the community through its tutoring program, educates and provides a forum for discussion by bringing in and co-sponsoring speaker panels, raises its own funds via the Annual Auction to allow students to work for non-profit organizations during the summer through the clerkship program. PILG attempts to encourage law students (and the legal community) to devote time, energy, and intellect to helping disadvantaged individuals obtain access to our legal system. Public interest law addresses the political, social, and economic welfare of communities, with an emphasis on society's underrepresented issues and groups. PILG is dedicated to issues within, but not limited to, the substantive areas of constitutional law, criminal law, civil rights law, gay and lesbian law, elder law, environmental law, family law, immigration law, labor law, urban law, poverty law, Native American law, and legal ethics.
  2. The Ralph Timothy Potter Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is the University of Denver Sturm College of Law Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. Membership is open to all in the University of Denver law school community who support our mission of promoting and protecting civil rights. Activities include intake, case investigation, and research at the Colorado Affiliate Office, presentations on civil liberties issues, publication of a civil liberties newsletter and internet update, participation on ACLU legal panel and board, and promotion of civil liberties on campus and in the community.
  3. The National Lawyers Guild student chapter works with the CO chapter and is dedicated to the need for basic and progressive change in the structure of our political and economic system. Through its members - lawyers, law students, jailhouse lawyers and legal workers united in chapters and committees - the Guild works locally, nationally and internationally as an effective political and social force in the service of the people
  4. The American Constitution Society for Law and Policy is a group of students concerned about American law and politics. They believe deeply in the importance of law as the mechanism that governs the relationships between and among the individuals and institutions that form our society, and recognize the direct relationship between legal theory and the broader political debate about the kind of society in which we live.
  5. Amnesty International is an international human rights organization that works impartially for the release of all prisoners of conscience, fair and prompt trials for political prisoners, and the end to torture, and executions. The Chapter at the College of Law presents several speakers on these and related topics throughout the year. It also initiates campaigns by writing letters to government officials and prisoners, and participates in Legal Support Network, a program recently initiated for lawyers and law students.
  6. Children's Legal Advocacy Group (CLAG) is a student organization focused on legal issues involving children and families. CLAG goals include increasing student awareness of legal issues involving children and families, and having an active influence in the community.
  7. The Spanish Speaking Lawyers Association (SSLA) is the student branch of the Lawyering in Spanish (LIS) program at DU. The SSLA works to facilitate the use of the Spanish language in the practice of law for DU law students and for the Denver legal community, while promoting global cultural understanding and a practical awareness of current legal issues in the Spanish-speaking community, both domestically and internationally.
  8. The Natural Resources and Environmental Law Society serves, educates, and provides information to law students regarding these important fields. NRELS sponsors several guest speakers throughout the year to provide its members, and all students, with topical and balanced information regarding legal and political issues of local, national, and global importance.
  9. The Elder Law Society is committed to working with DU Law students to further an interest in this complex area of law within the school and our community. The society believes issues affecting the elderly are important and that all law students should be informed to protect their family and friends in this truly service-oriented area of law.
  10. Various affinity groups, including the Black Law Students Association, the Asian Pacific American Law Students' Association, the Native American Law Students Association, DU OUTlaws, the Latino Law Students Association, the Jewish Law Students Association, the Middle Eastern and North African Law Society, Women's Law Student Association, and the Muslim Law Students Associationall organize events, some related to public interest as well.

The Student Public Interest Law Foundation ("SPILF") is a student group at the College of Law that focuses on public interest issues and public interest employment. The Associate Dean for Career Services (Susan Steele, 859-257-8320) each year seeks a grant on behalf of SPILF from the Kentucky Interest on Lawyers' Trust Account ("I.O.L.T.A.") Fund to support summer public interest fellowships for students. The amount included in any grant is supplemented by funds that students raise through activities like the annual student auction for SPILF. Students then apply to receive grants to support summer work for public interest groups.

Environmental & Energy Law Society - The Energy and Environmental Law Society (EELS) provides law students a forum to discuss, understand, and gain access to the fields of not only environmental and energy law, but also to the Maine lawyers and employers active in these and related fields. Environmental and energy law are remarkably broad and include areas often viewed separately. Such areas include land use, real estate, torts, state and local government, administrative law, food and animal law, climate change, ocean and coastal law, and marine law. EELS, in coordination with E2Tech, organizes fundraising opportunities, educational panel discussions, and community events to promote engagement.

Finch Society - The Finch Society focuses on connecting law students with rural and small town practitioners to provide a place for students to learn more about what rural and small town legal practice is like. The Finch Society’s goals are to encourage law students to pursue careers in rural and small town Maine. Access to legal resources is vital for all Americans and all Mainers, and the Finch Society hopes to increase this access by providing information and resources to students so that they feel confident practicing the law in rural, regional, and small town Maine.

If/When/How - If/When/How trains, networks, and mobilizes law students and legal professionals to work within and beyond the legal system to champion reproductive justice. In collaboration with communities, organizations, and movements, we work to ensure all people–especially those most likely to face reproductive injustice–have the ability to decide if, when, and how to create and sustain a family. The Maine Law chapter is one of over seventy law student chapters of the national If/When/How organization.

Maine Association for Public Interest Law - The Maine Association for Public Interest Law (MAPIL) is a group affiliated with the National Association for Public Interest Law (NAPIL). The group is committed to mobilizing the next generation of lawyers to be committed to equal justice. To achieve this we offer opportunities for pro bono hours and community service opportunities while in law school. MAPIL also engages with surrounding agencies that serve the poorest and most vulnerable populations and hosts an annual auction to raise money for fellowships.

Women's Law Association - The Women's Law Association (WLA) was developed in response to the increased awareness of the impact of the law on women and the impact of the growing number of women attorneys on the law. Through its educational activities, the WLA encourages the development of a network among women at Maine Law; women practitioners in all branches of the legal field; women in the judiciary; and organizations in the state that are concerned with the issues affecting women.
