This practical skills training will focus on criminal record expungement in New Jersey. Expungement relief helps individuals with criminal records overcome barriers to employment, housing, and community reunification. This training is designed to prepare volunteer attorneys to advise individuals experiencing poverty with criminal records on their eligibility for an expungement within a virtual clinical setting. Volunteers will also learn how to search and analyze criminal records through public access databases and request additional information when needed. Non-attorneys are encouraged to attend.

This CLE program will provide an overview of how attorneys can become involved in promoting access to justice through a variety of pro bono opportunities, including limited scope legal clinics and full representation. Whether you are looking to give back in an area of law that you already practice, or develop new skills by exploring other practice areas, there is a pro bono opportunity that is right for you! The program will also provide an overview of relevant New Jersey court rules, ethics opinions, and rules of professional conduct related to pro bono practice and poverty law.
