Law firms have a duty to protect their clients’ best interests, but that duty does not give cover for defrauding clients’ creditors or running afoul of judicial rules governing how debtors are represented. This episode examines the UpRight Law Firm, which has been repeatedly called to task for matching consumer debtors with lawyers ill-prepared to handle their cases and unfamiliar with their files. Perhaps most colorful amongst the travails of this firm has been an arrangement with Sperro LLC and Fenner & Associates LLC, where these companies would take possession of clients’ otherwise-underwater vehicles, in exchange for the payment of UpRight Law’s legal fees, and then tow the car across state lines, utilizing an arcane series of laws to then auction the vehicles and retain most – if not all – of the proceeds.
