The second fireside chat at the 2023 ABA Derivatives and Futures Law Committee mid-year program, hosted by Michael Spafford of Paul Hastings, featured Annette Nazareth, the Chair of the Governing Board of the Integrity Counsel for the Voluntary Carbon Market (Integrity Council), an independent governance body for the voluntary carbon market. Ms. Nazareth discussed the Integrity Council’s role and future actions, including its recently issued Core Carbon Principles (CCP) and Assessment Process. Annette discussed how the CCPs — grouped into three categories discussing Governance, Impact and Sustainability — will be used in the Assessment Process. In particular, she described the Integrity Council’s Assessment Framework, which is divided into two parts: the first part will evaluate program compliance with core principles, and the second part will assess certain carbon credit categories. Annette also discussed what to expect and gave her frank assessments of the current voluntary carbon market and its future.
