Message from the Chair

Cheryl Dancey Balough

Cyberspace Colleagues –

The Virtual Section Annual Meeting (VSAM) is just a couple of weeks away. Cyberspace Law Committee is offering five excellent CLE programs (including one of the showcases) and interactive meetings of our committee and subcommittees. See more details below. And, most importantly, please register now. There is no charge for BLS members. If you have registered, stay tuned for details about how to access the various programs and meetings

I encourage you to mark your calendars for our Cyberspace Law Committee virtual meeting on Monday, September 21 at 3 pm CT. Jon Garon, Director of the IP, Cybersecurity, and Technology Law Program and professor at Shepard Broad College of Law and chair of our new Digital Media, Gaming, and Entertainment Subcommittee, will be sharing some thought-provoking observations on current issues in the continuously evolving fields of digitized content.

A big thank you to David Satola and Michael Kelly, co-chairs of the Internet Governance Task Force for presenting in August a very instructive program on “Who Governs the Internet, and Why Should Business Lawyers Care?” The program was part of the Business Law Basics monthly webinar series. If you were not able to attend the program live, you can access the recording and materials in the Business Law Basics archive.

As Cheryl Burtzel notes below, there are many opportunities to get involved with the committee’s various working groups—including a few new ones. Please see Ed Morse’s article below about the Governance Design Working Group, which was formed at our January 2020 Cyberspace Law Institute and Winter Working Meeting. Many thanks to Jane Winn and Mike Jerbic for launching this initiative.

Finally, this is my last letter as chair of Cyberspace Law Committee. It has been a tremendous pleasure to work with and serve you in that role the past three years. Thank you! Cheryl Burtzel will take over as chair at the close of the VSAM, and the committee could not be in better hands. Please share with Cheryl and incoming vice-chair Ed Morse your ideas and let them know how you would like to get involved.

See you virtually at VSAM!
