Thomas E Kauper and Donald C Klawiter

In Memoriam: Thomas E. Kauper (1935–2025)

The Antitrust Law Section mourns the passing of Thomas E. Kauper, an icon in the antitrust world and a pillar of our Section’s leadership. Tom passed away on February 9, 2025, at the age of 89. A distinguished scholar, public servant, and mentor, his contributions to antitrust law spanned decades—from shaping enforcement at the DOJ’s Antitrust Division to training generations of lawyers at the University of Michigan Law School.

Reflecting on Tom’s legacy, Donald C. Klawiter, Sterlington PLLC, Former Section Chair shared:
"Tom was part of the original teaching team --with Bill Kovacic and Diane Wood -- of the Masters Program. If there was ever a Super Bowl line up, that was it!...I had the privilege of interviewing Tom for the Section's Oral History Program. In that interview (available on the website and on YouTube), Tom told the story of the Saturday Night Massacre from the Division's perspective… I recommend the oral history as a fitting memorial to Tom.”

Steve Cernak, Section Chair, added:

“I write to emphasize what a great friend of the Section Tom was.  He served in many leadership positions over the years and received Section awards…but he indirectly influenced the Section by teaching so many future antitrust lawyers who became Section leaders, including me… A real gentleman and, important for many of us, a true Michigan Man, Tom will be missed.”

Tom’s impact on antitrust law and our community is immeasurable. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
