Webinar: The Community Development Block Grant Program Turns 50

December 11th, 2024

In August 1974, President Gerald Ford signed the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974 into law. The Act created the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program. Accordingly, this year marks the 50th anniversary of the CDBG Program. CDBG provides annual grants to cities, counties and states to develop strong communities by providing decent housing, a suitable living environment, and expanding economic opportunities, principally for low- and moderate-income persons. State and local governments initiate and develop CDBG-eligible activities based upon a community’s needs, priorities, and benefits. CDBG is one of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) longest-running programs and awards approximately $3.5 billion in flexible grants to state and local governments every year.
