    Celebrating Trailblazing Black Women Lawyers

    This program will celebrate and commemorate the contributions of thre trailblazing black women lawyers to whom began practicing law more than a century ago and one who has been practicing law in the last two centuries.Charlotte Ray was the first black woman lawyer in the U.S. Gertrude Rush was the first black woman lawyer in Iowa, where she co-founded the National Bar Association 100 years ago. Paulette Brown has had a varied legal career, and was the first woman of color to become President of the American Bar Association.

    Charlotte Ray became the first woman to take and pass the bar exam in Washington DC, in 1872, after graduating from Howard University School of Law. She was the first Black woman to practice law in the U.S. Attendees will learn about her background and career.

    Gertrude Rush became a lawyer in 1918 after she studied the law in her husband’s law office and passed the Iowa bar Exam. Along with four Black male Iowa lawyers, she founded the National Bar Association in 1925. Gertrude Rush had a long legal career and was actively involved in the community.

    Paulette Brown became a lawyer in 1976 after graduating from Howard University and Seton Hall Law school. She has a long and varied legal career, including founding her own law firm, becoming  partner in more than one  major law firm, one of the first few women to become President of the National Bar Association; and the first black woman to be President of the American Bar Association.
