You're invited to join the next Women in Tax Forum Zoom Tea on Friday, December 15 at 3:00 pm ET. Grab your favorite cup of tea or coffee and take a 45-minute break with the Women in Tax Forum as we chat with Gretchen Ellen Nygaard. We will talk with Gretchen about her journey as a tax law professional, the aspects of her career that bring her joy, and advice she has for other women in tax.
Gretchen Ellen Nygaard is a Trial Attorney at the Department of Justice Tax Division. She represents the United States in federal district courts and bankruptcy courts nationwide in civil affirmative and defensive cases. She specializes in cases involving promotion of abusive tax shelters and schemes under 26 U.S.C. Sec. 6700 and has further litigated a variety of substantive tax issues.
In addition to her active litigation practice, she serves as the head of the Civil Tax Division E-Discovery Working Group. In that role, she aids in the development of discovery best practices, training initiatives, and troubleshooting eLitigation issues that arise in the day-to-day practice of the Division's litigators. She also serves as member of the Department of Justice E-Discovery Working Group and as a designated subject matter expert as part of the Attorney General's eLitigation initiative. While at the Department of Justice, she has received outstanding attorney awards and has served as faculty at the National Advocacy Center. She is currently a member of the Sedona Conference's Brainstorming Group on ESI in Government Proceedings.
Prior joining the Department of Justice in 2015, Ms. Nygaard was an associate in the Washington, D.C. office of Squire Patton Boggs where she worked in the field of international white-collar investigations in the financial industry. She is a proud graduate of the University of Virginia twice over - receiving her Bachelor of Arts in 2006 and returning to receive a J.D. in 2011.
