Analyzing U.S. Billion-Dollar Weather & Climate Disasters: The Latest Data & Tools Used in Weather and Climate Legal Proceedings

    1 PM EST

The U.S. has sustained 372 weather and climate disasters since 1980, where overall damages/costs reached or exceeded $1 billion (including CPI adjustment to 2023). The total cost of these 372 events exceeds $2.630 trillion. The accelerating growth over these years of these financial impacts greatly exceeds the US GDP and inflation growth. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Billion Dollar Weather and Climate Disaster Program provides data and analysis on these disasters. This information is essential for litigators, insurance companies, researchers, and others.

Join us for a webinar on the latest advancements in The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Billion Dollar Weather and Climate Disaster Program. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Center for Environmental Information (NCEI) manages this widely referenced program. Among the industries in the US served by NCEI, the legal services sector relies on NCEI-certified data for evidence when weather and climate are factors in legal proceedings.

Adam Smith, lead scientist of this program, will discuss their recent developments and plans. This year, through September, the US has experienced a record number (24) of such disasters, including hurricanes, tornados, floods, droughts, severe storms, wildfires, and winter storms. New product enhancements include mapping multi-hazard risk and socioeconomic vulnerability and new state and climate region disaster reports. Potential future developments include sub-billion-dollar event analysis ($100M to $1B) and integrated product partnerships with regional climate services.

The content of this program does not meet requirements for continuing legal education (CLE) accreditation. You will not receive CLE credit for participating.
