The engagement letter is the contract between you and your client. Lawyers tend to use their form engagement letter at the beginning of the representation and then forget it unless a problem later develops. Tailoring the original letter to the representation can avoid many future issues, however. Also, representation of a client can span years, and change over time, requiring revisions or supplements to the original agreement.
