      Humans are hard-wired to connect. We are biologically programmed to seek social support in others, and a feeling of belonging and connection drives our happiness, satisfaction, and well-being. However, continued isolation and loneliness contributes to declining health. In fact, while occasional loneliness is part of the human experience, long-term loneliness is associated with increased physical risks as well as weakened mental health, depression, anxiety, and distress. We all know what it's like to feel lonely; however, as we age, we lose colleagues and loved ones and we transition to "encore careers" or retirement and we are at risk for greater feelings of loneliness. The recent COVID-19 pandemic only fostered these feelings and contributed to weakened social support.

      During this program, we will define loneliness and isolation; review how the legal profession creates unique challenges for legal practitioners; consider risk factors for loneliness as we age; and discuss how employers and employees can work together, learn & support each other and build a culture of connection and community.

      • Evaluate and process the ways in which the legal profession creates unique challenges and obstacles to social connection and community for those working within in their chosen profession
