    Mitigating housing problems for pet owners during COVID – Abby Volin

    While securing pet-friendly housing has always been a challenge, the situation has become dire with the one-two punch delivered by the pandemic and a teetering national economy. While animal welfare organizations are managing the influx expected with the eviction moratorium orders expiring, as attorneys we have tools at our disposal to keep the pets out of the shelter and together with their family.

    Helping to Keep Your Employees, Volunteers and Visitors Safe and Measures to Try to Protect Your Organization from Liability Relating to Covid-19 - Rebecca Huss and Bonnie Lutz

    This session will discuss issues that have arisen due to Covid-19 as well as the always important issue of protecting humans and animals from injury in addition to organizations from liability relating to injuries caused by animals. Although numerous state and local Covid-19 measures have been imposed that shelters may be subject to, there are some general actions that every business can follow to try to protect the humans onsite and the organization from liability while still allowing an organization's lifesaving work to continue. This session will highlight some of these actions that can be taken given the likelihood that heightened safety protocols will need to be in place for the coming months.

    A review of the common employee problems that are inherent in running a shelter, tips for addressing communication issues and employee disputes, and the legal landscape of current case law.

    Understanding Aspects of Foster Home Agreements and Applications, Madeline Bernstein and Katie Barnett

    This session will highlight some of the aspects of foster home agreements and applications that an attorney should consider when advising shelters and rescue organizations. The presenters will focus on document provisions that are most essential in protecting organizations and foster homes as well as a shelter perspective that would address the needs and reasons to have alternative approaches to the issues. It will also provide information on a pro bono opportunity available through the American Bar Association that matches attorneys and organizations in need of assistance.
