    Safety in Mediation

    This program will discuss the need for mediators to be aware of safety issues in a wide variety of disputes. The presenters have a wide background in both commercial mediation as well as community and family mediation, and the program will give concrete examples dealing with many types of disputes and areas of the law. The program will also discuss safety as an ethical requirement for mediators and note various guidelines and standards available in this area.

    Betty Widgeon

    Widgeon Dispute Resolution & Consult. Serv. PLC

    Betty R. Widgeon, is a retired Michigan District Court Judge. She is the founder and President of Widgeon Dispute Resolution, PLC, which specializes in Arbitration, Mediation, Fact-Finding, and Consulting, focusing specifically on Labor, Employment, and Consumer cases. Judge Widgeon occasionally substitutes as a Visiting Judge in Michigan District and Circuit Courts. She also serves as a member of the Special Master Hearing Officers’ Roster for the Michigan Supreme Court. She has 25 years of experience resolving civil and criminal disputes. Her practice is now national in scope and covers a wide variety of issues and industries. Judge Widgeon is a Member of the National Academy of Arbitrators and the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals.

    Kristen M. Blankley, Associate Professor of Law, University of Nebraska College of Law, Lincoln, NE

    Kristen M. Blankley is an associateprofessor at the University of Nebraska College of Law, where she teaches on a wide variety of alternative dispute resolution and ethics topics, including negotiation, mediation, arbitration, and legal ethics. She is a 2004 graduate of The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law.  Professor Blankley's scholarship focuses on a wide variety of alternative dispute resolution and ethics issues, including arbitration preemption, limited scope representation, class action arbitrations, judicial review of arbitration awards, mediation ethics, and mediation confidentiality, as well as ethics for arbitration participants, and the restrains on bad behavior" by advocates and clients in arbitration.  Professor Blankley is currently the co-chair of the ABA Section of Dispute Resolution Ethics Subcommittee, and she is active on the ABA Law Student Division Arbitration Competition Committee. She is a mediator, a FINRA arbitrator and a certified resolution officer for the State of Nebraska's Commission of Industrial Relations.
