    One of the most popular applications of blockchain technology is the creation and distribution of virtual currency and other digital assets.  Often sold in Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs), there has been great interest in this marketplace from entrepreneurs and investors, even as federal and state regulators are carefully scrutinizing it.  This program will explore the history of virtual currencies and discuss some of the legal developments related to them.

    Less attention has been paid to other financial applications of blockchain technology that are being developed.  But some of these could revolutionize the securities, commodities, and financial services industries.  This program will explore some of the latest blockchain applications in the financial sector and key legal issues impacting their development.  It will focus primarily on the regulatory framework in the United States, but will also provide an overview of how some foreign jurisdictions are approaching this new technology.
