Getting Land into Trust: Department of Interior Proposes to Change the Regulations

    Tuesday, May 1, 2018
    4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Eastern
    Committee Program Call

    Program Description:
The Department of Interior’s (DOI) “land into trust” process offers tribes and tribal members a path to retake ancestral lands that have passed out of Indian possession, whether through cessions to the U.S. government, the effects of the “allotment” era, or other means. Acceptance by the federal government of title in trust offers opportunities for tribes to pursue economic development and cultural revitalization. The Trump administration has proposed making substantial revisions to these regulations, changes that would impose new requirements and would create a new application process for acquisitions for gaming purposes. When tribes expressed concerns with the proposed changes, DOI responded by scheduling a series of consultation sessions.
