    Program Overview:

Since 2013, five nuclear power reactors have shut down and have started the decommissioning process; additional plants may shut down and begin the transition to decommissioning.  Due to the large number of exemption and license amendment requests submitted by reactor licensees, the NRC issued an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, “Regulatory Improvements for Decommissioning Power Reactors,” to solicit comments from licensees, the public, and other stakeholders on a proposed rule to amend the current requirements for nuclear power reactors transitioning to decommissioning.  This panel discussion will present perspectives on the proposed rulemaking from Jerry Bonanno, Associate General Counsel of the Nuclear Energy Institute, and Geoff Fettus, Senior Attorney, Energy & Transportation Program, at the Natural Resources Defense Counsel.  Howard Benowitz, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Office of the General Counsel lead for the proposed rulemaking will provide background information and act as the moderator for what promises to be an engaging discussion.
