Forbidden Compliance: The Application of EU and Canadian Anti-boycott and Blocking Measures to US Economic Sanctions and Export Controls

A non-CLE program proudly presented by
    ABA Section of International Law
Export Controls and Economic Sanctions Committee

    Thursday, January 29, 2015
    12:00 - 1:00 PM EST
    Teleconference

The United States, the European Union and Canada continuously adopt sanctions regimes in order to pursue their foreign and security policy objectives. However, where the policies are incongruent, conflicts arise between these allies. In the past the European Union and Canada have sought to counter the effects of extraterritorial US sanctions legislation with the adoption of anti-boycott laws and blocking measures. The program will give an introduction to anti-boycott and blocking laws of the European Union, Germany and Canada, and ways to mitigate conflicts with extraterritorial U.S. sanctions and export control laws.

John Boscariol, McCarthy Tétrault LLP, Toronto
Anahita Thoms, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer US LLP, New York
