Recent reports on the access to justice crisis have raised urgent concerns, revealing that a staggering 92% of low-income individuals encounter significant barriers when seeking assistance for their civil legal needs. This issue is particularly acute for survivors of abuse and exploitation, who often must navigate multiple areas of law to re-establish their lives.
Human trafficking is a pervasive issue. In the United States alone, hundreds of thousands are affected, with cases reported in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and most U.S. territories. Legal assistance is crucial for a survivor's recovery. Effective, trauma-informed representation helps survivors overcome these challenges and continue on their path to recovery and freedom. The 2022 report by The Avery Center and National Survivor Law Collective, however, paints a stark picture of the United States as a "legal desert" for this population in particular.
But there is hope. While the prospect of undertaking pro bono cases for survivors can seem daunting, emerging initiatives offer innovative, impactful, and manageable opportunities for pro bono engagement. This CLE program will delve into how to use your skills and expertise to provide legal assistance to survivors. It will introduce the ALIGHT model - developed by the Alliance to Lead Impact in Global Human Trafficking -- which focuses on providing technology-based, real-time pro bono opportunities tailored to the lawyer's legal expertise and practice schedule. The program will also introduce other creative models for legal services delivery, including the Debt Bondage Repair Act (DBRA) Legal Clinic and the Survivor Counsel and Reuniting Families (SCARF) Initiative.
Through pro bono service, attorneys have the opportunity to refine their skills in trauma-informed lawyering and make a meaningful impact for survivors. Register today to learn more!
