- Legal basis: The goal is to protect critical voting and voter registration systems. Electoral Integrity refers to the fairness and transparency of an election, as well as adherence to rules and norms.
- What's going on: Various factors can undermine the integrity of elections, including foreign intervention, technology, photo ID requirements, gerrymandering, questionable authenticity of results, accessibility, failure to protect critical infrastructure, etc.
- Teaching moment: An election is credible when the outcome reflects the people's will, the path to the outcome is transparent and inclusive, and voters, election officials, and political parties trust the outcome.
Hot Topic 2: Technology and misinformation
- Legal basis: Technology's potential impact on the election process requires careful consideration and safeguards to ensure the integrity of democratic processes.
- What's happening: Deepfakes, voice simulations, AI misinformation/fake pictures, social media influence, privacy concerns, algorithm biases, etc.
- Teaching moment: Learn how to determine what's real and promote good voter literacy to make informed decisions and build confidence for electoral outcomes. Enhancing voter education through accurate, reliable, and trusted information can help enhance voter turnout and participation.
Hot Topic 3: Voter Intimidation
- Legal basis: Federal and state laws protect access to the ballot. Implementing reforms that improve voting processes for all and provide fair access to the ballot.
- What's happening: Various means of preventing maximum participation, interruptions in the voting process (intimidation, blockading, following, yelling, and harassment, etc.), electoral violence (physical harm or threats with animals, guns, etc.), intentional voter misdirection (excessive questioning about citizenship, primary languages spoken, requirements to vote, criminal records, etc.), falsely leading others to believe they are election officials (poll workers, poll watchers, other official capacity, etc.)
