With recreational marijuana now legal in more than half of the states, attorneys, judges and court staffs may want to learn more, beyond common perceptions, about cannabis and its effect on the brain and body. This webinar will provide an overview of the differences in the various strains of cannabis, the properties of cannabis, its impact on the body and brain of both adolescents and adults, and how it could impact the day-to-day work of attorneys and courts.

More than half the states have legalized the use of recreational marijuana and 3/4 of the states permit the use of medical marijuana. With the rise in cannabis use precipitated by both recreational and medical cannabis legalization, judges, court staff and attorneys must ignore anecdotal perceptions of marijuana use and fully understand the physical and psychological effects of cannabis on the body. Additionally, cannabis use by adolescents presents unique concerns, particularly related to brain development. The faculty will also review the potential correlation between cannabis use and mental health and discuss cannabis use disorder and potential treatment modalities. The webinar will conclude with a discuss of the impact of cannabis use on litigants and court operations.
Learning objectives:
- Understand the physiological and psychological effects of cannabis use on the brain that can lead to or impact justice-involvement
- Explain the unique effect of cannabis use that can precipitate justice-involvement or present challenges to court supervision for adolescents
- Recognize the impact on treatment court participation for individuals who use cannabis or who present with a diagnosis of cannabis use disorder
