This webinar is designed for attorneys interested in learning more about the nuts and bolts of state and local government False Claims Act (FCA) cases. Like the federal statute they are modeled after, state and local FCAs provide government entities with powerful tools for addressing fraud on the public fisc. Attendees will gain insights into the broad scope of FCA practice, the central role played by relators (also known as qui tams ) in bringing fraud to the government's attention, and how state and local entities have adapted the federal template to serve their jurisdictions.

Learning Objectives

Attendees will learn about the basic elements of an FCA claim, potential exposure to treble damages and significant monetary penalties, and unique issues related to cases brought by qui tam plaintiffs.
Attendees will understand the similarities and differences between state statutes and the federal FCA.
Attendees will learn about cities and municipalities that have adopted FCA provisions and identify local issues addressed by these ordinances.
Attendees will gain insights about state and local FCA practice through practical case examples.
