A Court Divided: October Term 2023
The use of technology is essential to narrowing the justice gap, particularly in rural areas where attorneys are few and far between. This program focuses on initiatives taken and lessons learned in the "Four Corners" states (Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah) to bridge justice gaps using technology. Attendees will learn from our panel of experts about how their experiences can be applied to better address issues created by digital divides and legal deserts.

As access to justice becomes more technology dependent, focusing on technology becomes essential to narrowing the justice gap. Although true in urban areas, this required focus is even more important in rural areas, where attorneys are typically few and far between. The panelists for this interactive, fast-paced CLE program are on the front lines of bridging digital divides, and greening legal deserts, to help narrow the justice gap. Panelists will address challenges faced by the "Four Corners" states (Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah) as well as successes (and lessons learned) that can be applied anywhere.
The conversation will include a discussion of tools to measure the justice gap, such as identifying access to justice indicators, demographics, resources, and mapping. The panel also will discuss: the effect of gaps and resulting challenges to providing legal services; efforts being undertaken to bridge these gaps, including specific efforts that have worked and those that have not; the role of collaboration and securing buy-in for implementing change; and how to measure success. This CLE program is not to be missed by anyone wrestling with how to better address issues created by digital divides and legal deserts.
