Her Story: The Resilient Woman Lawyer's Guide to Conquering Obstacles, Book 2
In the past year, Republican legislators and right-wing groups across the U.S. have advanced bills that discriminate against drag performances alongside the bills that have targeted various LGBTQ rights. During 2023, the American Civil Liberties Union has been monitoring nearly 500 anti-LGBTQ bills, many aimed at banning drag performances. These measures are labeled by the ACLU as an attempt to erase LGBTQ+ presence from public life. In this context of mounting challenges, the importance of preserving drag culture as a form of artistic expression and LGBTQ+ representation becomes ever more crucial. Drag is a challenge to the normative conceptions of gender under heteropatriarchal norms.

This session is not a Gender 101 or Trans 101 session; rather, the panel presents the perspectives of experts and activists who see drag as one of many tools of a gender liberatory framework. This panel delves into the journeys of two drag performers who are or have been lawyers: Benjamin Schatz, co-founder and, chief writer for The Kinsey Sicks ("America's Favorite Dragapella© Beautyshop Quartet") since 1993, and-founder of the AIDS Civil Rights Project of National Gay Rights Advocates in 1985, and Ari Jones / Pop Rox, Residency & Naturalization Programs Director at Oasis Legal Services, where they work with LGBTQ asylees and other immigrant survivors of trauma. Schatz has recently ended his time performing as Rachel full-time in The Kinsey Sicks, but continues to write the lyrics for the group, which often provide satirical critiques of right-wing politics and law. And Jones / Pop Rox has recently organized Legalize Drag, a collective of drag artist legal professionals protesting attacks on the art of drag and trans, gender non-conforming, and queer communities. Jones and Schatz are joined by Jenny Pizer, Chief Legal Officer and Eden/Rushing Chair for Lambda Legal, which both opposes these anti-LGBTQ attack bills in legislatures and is currently challenging dozens of those that have become law. The panel will be moderated by D Dangaran, co-chair of the National Trans Bar Association and Director of Gender Justice at Rights Behind Bars.
