This panel will overview the impacts of the current and proposed PFAS regulations on clean water and wastewater utilities, including the mandatory PFAS monitoring under the UCMR 5 framework, the recently proposed EPA's MCLs for 6 PFAS compounds in drinking water, the looming wastewater, biosolids and stormwater regulations, as well as other regulations enacted at both federal and state levels. Subsequent actions that municipalities may take and potential funding for such actions will also be discussed. Experienced lawyers will overview the state of regulation from the view of public agencies and private counsel, while scientists from the panel will provide the state-of-science on PFAS sources, environmental fate and transport, and fingerprinting techniques for source identification and cost recovery, relevant to PFAS contamination of drinking water sources, wastewater, and biosolids. Ultimately, the panel will identify legal and scientific tools for tackling the complex and uncertain issues related to PFAS that water utilities are and will continue to face in the long term.
