There has been a growing interest in and appreciation of Indigenous Knowledge/Traditional Ecological Knowledge. Long derided as inferior to "Western science", more and more policymakers and government officials and staff realize IK/TEK is significantly ahead of the curve when it comes to sustainable natural resource management, including wildfire prevention through prescribed burns, water resource and habitat protection, and monitoring of and response to climate change impacts. But where does IK/TEK fit into the law, in a manner that is truly meaningful and not exploitative of Indigenous nations and knowledge holders? The Biden Administration is tackling this head-on, along with a handful of states, and other nations-such as Canada with its recently adopted Impact Assessment Act-are already at the implementation stage.
