In addition to these struggles, the stigma of mental health continues to be a challenge to wellbeing especially within the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. Mental health needs are downplayed, with pressures to succeed academically, professionally, and for members of these communities to be the "model minority." In one study, while 18% of the general U.S. population sought mental health services and resources, only 8.6% of Asian Americans did so. Additionally, with the negative health and economic impacts of the pandemic experienced across the world, members of the AAPI community have experienced increased discrimination and hate crimes. This has significantly impacted their mental health.
There are also systemic barriers to the access of mental health and receiving quality treatment. Stigmas include mental illness being a sign of weakness or bringing shame to the individual and their family. Additionally, the desire to protect the family's reputation can often discourage help-seeking until there is a crisis. Many first-generation AAPI members experienced trauma as immigrants in a foreign land. As a result, the next generation may feel guilty about sharing their struggles in fear that it may seem insignificant compared to their parents' or grandparents' struggles. It is important for members of the AAPI legal community to have opportunities to seek culturally competent care to support their goals and align with their cultural values.
