      Recognizing online marriages can be tricky. What if the new couple does not even reside in the country where the officiant holds office? Can national officials refuse to recognize these marriages if, for instance, the new couple is of the same sex but the authorities in the country where the couple lives do not recognize same-sex marriages? What if the marriage violates some general human rights principle, such as the restrictions on child marriages? This seminar will use a case involving the recognition of Utah marriages and its broader international implications. At the end of the program, attendees will know:

      1. How zoom has affected the law of marriage
      2. How to determine the validity of a contract performed online
      3. Whose law controls in the case of a status issue like marriage, the law of the online site, or the law of the physical location of the parties
      4. What interests are at stake in the outcome of litigation over the status of online marriages
      5. What would be the consequences for other areas of the law if the courts allow the Utah marriages to prevail over the Rabbinical or other national strictures
