Increasing ATJ Using Plain Language Services [CC]
In this session, you will learn why using plain language in court forms, policies, and procedures is essential for ensuring access to justice. Panelists will explore how plain language programs increase language access, court efficiency, and public trust and confidence in the courts. You will then learn about best practices and models for implementing a plain language program in your jurisdiction.

Effective language access and simplification of court policies and procedures cannot be accomplished without the use of plain language (PL). The experienced panelists in this session will focus on the following topics:
- The critical role of PL in increasing access to justice, language access, and court simplification;
- How PL saves time and money for court systems;
- How PL supports the Conference of Chief Justices' Resolution 5: In Support of Implementation of Clear Communications and Streamlined Procedures in the Courts
- How the use of PL increases trust and confidence in the courts; and
- The importance of ensuring the use of good PL.
The learning objectives for this session include:
- Learn the role of plain language (PL) in language access and court simplification.
- Learn what is PL and the major steps of any PL Project.
- Learn how to select PL providers to ensure the use of good PL.
- Learn how to implement a PL program in your court.
- Learn about three different PL models in state court systems.
This is one of five sessions in the "2022 ATJ Chairs Meeting" series. This session will be 90 minutes in length, including 15 minutes for questions, and will feature the following experienced panelists:
