With over 80% of attorneys identifying as White Non-Hispanic, we continue to pursue a legal profession that reflects the diversity of our general population and the communities we serve. This pursuit includes advocating for aspiring first-generation lawyers from families and communities that are not currently represented in our profession. But there are many challenges that come with the first-generation lawyer label. According to Bloomberg Law’s 2021 Law School Preparedness Survey, first-generation law students are far more likely to leave with debt, and with higher amounts of debt. New data from the National Association for Law Placement reveals that first-generation college graduates turned lawyers were employed in bar-passage-required jobs at a rate of 73.2%, compared to 84.3% for law graduates with a parent or guardian with a JD. And these figures only account for folks who actually made their way through law school.
So how can we support aspiring first-generation lawyers who are currently sitting in our secondary classrooms? How are we supporting the first-generation students studying at our law schools? What are we doing to support practicing first-generation lawyers who lack the social networks of many of their peers?
