Consumers have traditionally focused on the cost and reliability of energy, but the energy transition is bringing new considerations into play for consumers, including behind-the-meter renewable energy, impacts of climate change, the role of the smart grid in consumer choices, and energy and environmental justice issues. These new factors require rethinking the how and when to engage consumers and what impacts the transition will have on end-use customers. The panel will assess energy transition issues from the perspective of energy consumers. The panel will look at how customers are influencing the grid, through choice over new power generation (including EVs and other “smart” devices) and public concern (or lack thereof) on issues of climate change and energy and environmental justice. The panel will conclude with a discussion on how this impacts lawyers and their clients by elevating the role of the consumer into decision making beyond pure policies and laws.
