Elder and child abuse are two of the most troubling problems afflicting our society. Nationally, one in ten elders living at home is subject to abuse, neglect, or exploitation; and the US loses, on average, between four and seven children every day to child abuse and neglect. In at attempt to address these problems directly, the state of Oregon imposes a legal obligation upon a variety of “public and private officials” present in the state to report both elder and child abuse. Abuse reporting helps state and local governments assess the need for increased social services and provide a critical link in the state’s system of protection. Lawyers are included in the definitions of “public or private officials” who have duties under Oregon law to report both child abuse and elder abuse.

In this program, Stuart Teicher, Esq. breaks down the statutory obligation for lawyers to report elder abuse and child abuse in Oregon explores how this duty can be seen as an empowering act of service. Indeed, three quarters of all child abuse reports come from mandatory reporters.

Join Teicher as he breaks down the requirements of ORS 124.050 et seq., and 419B.005 et seq. He covers the basic reporting requirements including the parameters of abuse, potential perpetrators, circumstances under which reporting is required and exceptions to the reporting rules.

This course fulfills Oregon's Mandatory Child or Elder Abuse Reporting CLE requirement.
