Mental health and substance use disorders are no strangers to the legal profession. In fact, practitioners face these issues at rates greater than the general population. Our panelists will discuss the issues that arise with impaired colleagues. We will hear from an experienced LAP professional about warning signs and steps to take when helping a person who may be impaired, including how to best approach the conversation for yourself and the impaired colleague, talking points and resources for continuing the conversation, and possible options for treatment. We will also examine the legal and ethical implications for practitioners and their law firms, preventative measures, and proposed policy and well-being initiatives, that practitioners in any practice setting may implement to protect clients as well as save careers.
