During this 2.5-hour program, seasoned panelists will focus on these topics:

    • Federal Housing Rights Overview: This segment will provide an overview of federal housing rights, focusing on those most relevant to the military community under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) and Fair Housing Act. Topics will include lease terminations due to military duty, foreclosure and eviction protections, default judgments, and accommodations for disabilities. The session will also include information about how to access assistance from the U.S. Department of Justice and other agencies. (1 hour, including 15 minutes for questions)
    • 15-minute break
    • Housing Rights for Tenants: The unlawful detainer process can be complex due to the various notices and basis for eviction. This session will provide both practical approaches and proactive measures to better safeguard housing rights for tenants, especially for veterans and their families. Evictions can have devasting consequences, even resulting in homelessness. To better understand the issues, this segment will provide a step-by-step approach from the inception of notices that must be afforded to tenants; filing of the eviction; judgments; motions to stay the evictions; consumer debt issues; and other post-judgment issues. Best practices for defending the eviction or reaching a positive settlement will be covered to provide a broad approach and overview of eviction issues. The goal is to help identify legal issues in a holistic manner to better direct tenants on their rights and how they can better address their eviction and housing needs. Accessing available community resources for assistance will also be covered to ensure our veterans and their families can protect current and future housing. (1.5 hours, including 15 minutes for questions)
