Nurturing a rewarding and productive life for lawyers requires cultivating mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. In this special Distance Learning Webinar, designed specifically for Well-Being Week, a university president/ law professor-turned-author (Duquesne President Ken Gormley), an active federal appeals judge (Judge Thomas M. Hardiman), a retired federal appeals judge who engages in mediation (Judge Timothy K. Lewis), and a practicing employment/tax attorney (Alison Sulentic, Esq.) will use Gormley's newly-published novel, "The Heiress of Pittsburgh," to discuss important well-being issues for lawyers in a timely, lively and inspiring fashion. Not only will the speakers discuss decisions and life-choices faced by the characters in this legal drama, which are issues faced by all lawyers today, they will also discuss the author's process of writing a work of fiction over a period of decades, and the collaborative process (including collaboration with other lawyers) that allowed this artistic project to come to life, producing professional and personal satisfaction for all concerned. This engrossing Webinar will explore issues of work-life balance; the importance of regularly assessing the value and meaning of one's career choices; the importance of positively impacting one's community and the people within it in order to find meaning in one's work; the vital importance of shaping and guiding the next generation of lawyers as a form of personal and professional fulfillment; the importance of pursuing artistic interests and passions over time as an element of well-being; and the vital importance of looking at life holistically and defining success for oneself, in making fundamental career choices, rather than being hamstrung by the definitions created by others (something that is doubly important, today, in the aftermath of the recent COVID pandemic).

    Takeaways :

    • Regularly evaluate career satisfaction by assessing work relationships and community engagement.
    • Reflect upon nurturing newer attorneys who desire personal and professional fulfillment by encouraging their creative endeavors.
    • Pursue the collaborative process that allows pursuits like writing/publishing to take flight and reach broad audiences.
