Family Advocate Fall 2021: Vol. 44, No.2
Increasingly, lawyers, judges and juries are confronted with all forms of statistical evidence. In this program, Dr. Schwartz will describe what types of questions are amenable to statistical analysis, what statistical analysis is capable of "proving", and how to recognize good statistical work. Using concrete examples in a legal real-world framework, Dr. Schwartz will explain buzzwords and phrases and help you recognize when they are used correctly and when they are not.

Increasingly, and in a variety of legal settings, lawyers, judges, and juries are confronted with all forms of statistical evidence. One of the crucial questions facing those stakeholders is whether that statistical evidence is meaningful or not.
Being able to understand that evidence, knowing how to cross-examine it in deposition and at trial, and knowing whether your expert is well-prepared to defend her statistical work is critical. In this seminar, Dr. Schwartz will explain what types of questions are amenable to statistical analysis, what statistical analysis is capable of "proving" and how to recognize good statistical work from shoddy work.
Using concrete legal examples in a real-world framework, Dr. Schwartz will explain what buzzwords and phrases such as 'hypothesis testing', 'confidence interval', and 'statistical significance' mean. and, more importantly, he will help you to recognize when they are used correctly and meaningfully and when they are not.
