From droughts to rising sea levels to heat waves, the impacts of climate change are increasingly being felt around the worldparticularly by Indigenous communities. Several tribes have adopted adaptation plans and mitigation strategies in response to the climate crisis. The Biden administration has also expressed its commitment to addressing climate change. Since taking office, President Biden has issued several executive orders, including Executive Order 14008. Titled Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad, E.O. 14008 created a government wide Justice40 Initiative with the goal of delivering 40 percent of the administrations climate and clean energy investments to disadvantaged communities. Many tribal communities are still healing from the pollution and other detrimental effects of traditional energy development promoted by past federal policies. Today, tribes are setting their own energy policies, which directly consider climate change impacts and transition to clean energy.
This panel focuses on tribal responses to climate change through the use of indigenous science and forward-thinking policy initiatives. Panelists will discuss the increase in wildfires and how the state and tribal governments are working together to expand cultural and prescribed fires in California. They will also discuss how climate change has promoted the transition from fossil fuel to clean energy in Indian country and the federal governments support for clean energy investments. Attendees will learn more about tribal sovereignty and how tribes are exercising their inherent sovereignty to protect their communities from disproportionate impacts of climate change. Common challenges and best practices for promoting tribal-state-federal collaboration in the fight against climate change will be identified.
