Closed Captioned.
In the U.S., 2020 was perhaps the most socially charged year in the 21st century, with many taking sides and expressing an opinion. This program looks at how socially impactful subjects such as politics, race, and religion impact franchise systems. In today's world, public or seemingly private positions are more apt than ever to lead to viable civil rights and other discrimination claims and/or public relations disasters. Difficult questions will be discussed: What is the fallout when franchisors or franchisees advocate a specific civil rights or political position while on company time? What about on their own time? Can franchisors outwardly or inwardly act on their beliefs: "We only offer franchises to Democrats, or to Christians, or to Black people." "We are a women-owned vegetarian restaurant chain and only offer franchises to women vegetarians." "We don't want to deliver into 'that' neighborhood." This program will examine the damages - both from litigation and from public perception - that franchisors and franchisees may face when taking public positions on controversial issues.
