The events of 2020 surrounding the Black Lives Matter movement, the focus of the Biden administration, and COVID-19 inequities have catalyzed a nationwide discussion on environmental justice. The Biden administration has committed to make environmental justice part of every federal agency???s mission to ensure that historically marginalized and overburdened communities play a role in federal policies and decisions. Many states and local governments have entered the fold, enacting legislation requiring environmental justice analyses for permitting, planning, and enforcement, and similar legislation is pending in several more states. This session will focus on implementation of environmental justice principles in legal practice. Panelists from across sectors will share their perspective on how achieving equitable outcomes under federal and state statutes, regulations, and other policies intersect with the practice of law and the role of lawyers. They will also highlight what to expect as these federal and state initiatives take shape and environmental justice considerations are integrated across the environmental, energy, and resources legal frameworks.
